Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
