Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the popular program reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.

“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Does the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
