In a severely negative assessment, the military oversight panel asserted that the nation is "nowhere near" where it needs to be to effectively secure itself and its allies, especially during a time when defence challenges to Europe are "considerable".

The examination determined that Britain is falling short of its alliance commitments and falling "far short" of its claimed leadership position.

The report was released as the military department identified potential areas for half a dozen new weapons production facilities, being part of a overall approach to enhance local military manufacturing.
