The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled official remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies provision
- Post-war administration of the area
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do any agreement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israelis desire the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the dusk falls, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"My family are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported another two victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south, health workers said.
