Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
