Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
