Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced
Currently exist "no plans" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.
Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.
A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was not "necessary".
The White House did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.
Previous Developments
The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Some reports indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar claiming the president had pressured him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.
However, on Monday Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.
"Let it be cut where it stands," he said.
Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.
Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.
Negotiating Stances
The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of extensive requirements that involve the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.
The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.
He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.
Military Considerations
Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.
The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he commented.
