Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at educational facility
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for militant organizations

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Local residents told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in recent months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the violence.
