Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
